The ARA Project – Saving the Great Green Macaw

There was a time when thousands of Great Green Macaws soared freely in the sky above Costa Rica. Now, there are only about 300 wild ones left in the small Central American country. Deforestation–particularly the commercial logging of the mountain almond tree, which Great Green Macaws rely on for food and nesting–as well as rampant poaching, have virtually wiped out a once flourishing species.

In early 2013, Mark Hagen, Director of Research at Rolf C. Hagen Inc. and HARI, travelled to Costa Rica to see what local conservation groups are doing to help avert the tragic demise of a beautiful species.
