We often get questions about feeding peanuts and sunflower seeds to parrots. Peanut and sunflower kernels are a great source of protein for parrots when not over fed and are carefully calculated within the diet.
The concern for feeding peanuts is that the SHELLS are known to harbor the mold Aspergillus flavus which can cause Aspergillosis in parrots. Tropican and Tropimix only contain de-hulled human grade peanuts.
And all formulas developed by HARI have been very carefully calculated and go through a rigorous 3-stage testing – which is unprecedented among bird food makers.
EACH batch goes through two onsite tests at Hagen Industries and final batch test at the HARI facility (the final and 3rd step in our testing process means EACH batch is tested and fed to the HARI flock prior to distribution to retail/consumers). At a time when most bird food companies have shut their research centers, HARI continues its ongoing work on the research and development of advanced bird nutrition. In fact, HARI is the longest-standing research facility dedicated to studying the care and breeding of parrots.
The HARI flock have been feed a diet SOLELY consisting of Tropican extruded pellets (which includes the de-hulled human grade peanuts and sunflower seeds) for over 30 years – that 3 generations of parrots on these formulas!

Our top priority is providing safe and high-quality bird food that your feathered friends can enjoy. That’s why every batch of HARI products goes through a rigorous three-step quality control process before it is distributed.
